I’m extremely excited that Fatakra will finally be screening in Houston on Thursday, August 11th as part of the Slant Film Festival and sponsored by Aurora Picture Show. It will be playing at the historic River Oaks Theater at 7:30pm along with four other Asian American shorts.
My dad came to the US in 1980 and quickly picked Houston as the place to settle. He was a chemical engineer so jobs in the petrochemical industry were available (never mind the recession of the 80s that would soon hit), but more importantly, the weather reminded him of India and it seemed a city of everyday people — not the too busy attitudes, fast pace, and false glamour of the other big cities.
I grew up in Houston, and although I love Austin and New York, I still think of Houston as home.
I know the neighborhoods. From moving from apartment to apartment in various parts of the city until we finally settled into our house in Katy, I’ve experienced many parts of the city first hand. Growing up in Houston meant trips to Astroworld, gaarba in the Astroarena, being a part of the Young Astronauts, high school dates to the Miller Outdoor theater to watch the Houston Symphony or the Shakespeare Festival, nearly setting an abandoned field on fire during July 4th, and weekend drives to Galveston.
For me Houston is more than just the city of my childhood. I lived there for five years between undergrad and grad school, so I also got to experience adult life there. In those years, I worked at SnapStream Media and started Shunya. I spent most of my free time “inside the loop” hanging out at the Social, the Heights, the Montrose area, Midtown, the Village, and occasionally even downtown. Houston boasts its own active arts and social scene that friends who left right after high school and never returned will never know.
So it’s exciting to finally be able to come home and share this film with old friends.
